Head trauma is a serious injury that can leave a person needing medical attention.
Head traumas are caused by blunt force trauma, which causes different injuries, from mild concussions to brain hemorrhage. Immediate medical attention and evaluation of pupillary reaction are necessary for people with traumatic brain injuries since they can lead to severe health issues.
This article will discuss the relationship between unequal pupils and head trauma.
Unequal pupil size is when one pupil is larger than the other. In most cases, both pupils will be of equal size, but in some conditions, one pupil may be larger than the other. This occurs because of situations like head trauma.
The answer is that the oculomotor nerve controls the pupils.
The oculomotor nuclei are in the midbrain, signaling the ocular muscles to control the eyes. They also tell the eyes how much pupil dilation to do by releasing neurotransmitters into the muscle fibers of the iris.
.
The retina is another important part of this process because it contains photoreceptor cells called rods and cones, which activate when light enters them. These activated cells then send signals through their axons from the retina back through the optic pathway to reach areas like the thalamus, occipital cortex, frontal cortex (part of the frontal lobe), or superior colliculus—which all have roles in interpreting visual information.
A pupilometer is used to measure the size of the pupils and the neurological pupil index.
The device shines a light into one eye and measures the amount of light reflected from each pupil. From this information, it is possible to determine how large each pupil is and how much it constricts when exposed to light. Diagnosing TBIs with the pupilometer begins with an examination by a trained physician or nurse using specialized equipment.
