Location is everything in real estate, and nowhere is location more of a positive than the peaceful mountain oasis of Serene Lakes, CA. Near enough to Lake Tahoe to enjoy it but far enough away to avoid crowds of tourists, Serene Lakes is conveniently situated 41 miles from Reno and 98 miles from Sacramento. It has fabulous year-round activities and is a highly desirable place to buy a home. 

The elevation of Serene Lakes sits between 6800 to 7200 feet. There are two conjoined twin spring-fed lakes of approximately 50 acres each, named Serena and Dulzura by Mark Twain, that are surrounded by the Serene Lakes community with its cabins, grand chalets, all season resorts, and campgrounds. There are hiking and mountain biking trails, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, fishing for rainbow and lake trout, and exploration. Motorized boats are restricted, so it the atmosphere is peaceful and serene for a quiet paddle around the scenic shoreline. 

The History of Serene Lakes 

During the California Gold Rush, Serene Lakes was on the most traveled route, originally, the two lakes had the name Ice Lakes because they were commercially harvested and transported by the railroad as a source of ice for the City of San Francisco from 1870 to 1927 before refrigeration. That was a prime reason for the community’s early prosperity. 

Real Estate in Serene Lakes 

Consisting of approximately 2,400 acres, the constantly-growing development has 825 private homes ranging in value between $300,000 and $950,000. Lakefront homes cost between $950,000 and $2,000,000. Regular lot prices range between $89,000 and $200,000 with an average price of $137,000 while lakefront lots range between $550,000 and $650,000. 

Donner Summit 

This is the historically significant and famous mountain pass in the northern part of the Sierra Nevada, with Serene Lakes in the “backyard“ of five local ski resorts--including the Royal Gorge Cross-Country Ski Resort. Donner Summit has an elevation of 7,056 feet and boasts of some of the best spring skiing in the United States. During the summer, the daytime high temperature is between the mid-70s and the mid-90s, and in the winter the area receives heavy snowfall.
