The next time you go out on the town, visit a friend to watch the game, head to the beach for a big party, or what have you, think twice before you get behind the wheel following your get together. You may think you’re “okay” to drive, but are you? The costs of a DUI can be life-changing. Naturally, this refers to the monetary aspect of the charge. But it can go much further than that. If you seriously injure someone or, worse yet, are responsible for their death, you will not only face jail time but have to live with the guilt of your actions for the rest of your life. No one wants that!

To give you an idea of some of the costs involved with a DUI – in a monetary sense – we have put together the following information.

Note: At any given moment, jail time, fine amounts, and more can change. All of the below stated information may not still be accurate or in effect. It can, however, be used as not only a guideline but as a warning to never drink and drive.

Possible Monetary Complications from DUIs

The following are penalties that apply, more or less, to the monetary aspect of DUI penalties…

First DUI Conviction:

  • IID (ignition interlock device) installation for six months

Though prices will vary, for a single vehicle installation, you can expect to pay at least $150 for installation. But wait…there’s more! In addition to installation charges, there are also monthly charges. Rather than buying one outright, many people opt for leasing an IID. This could run to approximately $100 a month. Some models come with cameras, GPS trackers, and more.

  • A fine for as much as $1000 or as little as $390
  • Jail time up to six months

Which means you won’t be working and bringing home a paycheck. You may even get fired.

Second DUI Conviction:

If within 10 years of a first conviction, an adult is convicted of a misdemeanor second offense DUI (with no aggravating circumstances), the penalties can be one or more of the following:

  • IID installation for one year (court-ordered)
  • A fine as high as $1000 or as low as $390
  • Jail time up to one year

Third DUI Conviction (within 10 Years):

  • Three-year driver’s license suspension or IID installation for two years
  • A fine as high as $1000 or as low as $390
  • Jail time up to one year

Legal Fees, etc.

Most convicted DUI offenders acquire legal representation. Court costs and lawyer fees can be exorbitant. There could be an average court cost of approximately $1500, with DUI attorney costs averaging as much as $5000.

Additionally, there are:

  • Jail fees
  • Licensing fees
  • Alcohol education/treatment costs
  • Impound charges
  • Increased charges for car insurance coverage
  • Lost wages
  • Alternative transportation costs and more.

Clearly, it is a pricey endeavor to drink and drive.
