West Lake Tahoe is all about the small local communities. The communities are varied and each have their own unique charm. Some are closer to either the world famous snow or the luxurious golden sands and clear waters of the lake itself.
The area is known for being secluded and quieter than other areas around the lake. Although only fifty-thousand people live around the lake, during peak days the number of people can reach three-hundred-thousand. Those numbers rival visitors to the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone national park. West Lake Tahoe manages to avoid this influx of visitors making it the perfect home for those wishing for a quieter place to live.
During the summer months, the lake provides a couple of opportunities. The water is a refreshing high of 80 degrees, perfect for boating or swimming activities. Since the beaches are quieter, even fishing or Tahoe Tessie hunting is possible. A long bike path follows along the west and north side of the shore, granting beautiful views and safe riding. If hiking is your passion, there are plenty of trails surrounding the area with a whole range of mountains to explore.
The winter months are world famous for a glorious amount of snow and mountains designed for downhill sports. The local mountain resort is Homewood which is well known among the local crowd and enables small town skiers to enjoy the mountain.
Although the area is quiet, just south is emerald bay, the most photographed part of Lake Tahoe. This area has several historical and beautiful aspects. Vikingsholm, for example, is a 38 room mansion designed with the finest Scandinavian architecture in the U.S. Also, the nearby Fannette Island is the only island in Lake Tahoe and is a National Natural Landmark.
The great restaurant options are also a highlight of living in the area. Many of them appeal to the natural surroundings, taking residence along the water or among the mountain passes. The Sunnyside restaurant and lodge provides quality lakeside dining.
Really, what the West shore provides is the perfect place to enjoy immaculate outdoors. Pristinely quiet conditions as if no one in the world has discovered your piece of heaven. Whether your need is a home or a vacation house, the west shore is a divine application of mountainous living.
