A tutor provides assistance with homework and teaches children requiring private instruction in specific subject matter. A subject matter tutor, however, is not required to have a professional background or a higher education degree. Their background does not usually include specialized training in exceptionalities, learning disabilities, specific syndromes, or case management.

An educational therapist is a highly trained professional who combines educational and therapeutic approaches and provides individualized, intensive intervention, formal and informal assessment, and case management on behalf of children, adolescents, and adults who have a wide range of learning problems. These learning problems may include dyslexia, attention deficits, academic difficulties, sensory motor skills, visual and auditory processing disorders, poor memory skills, poor motivation, low academic self esteem, poor social, organizational, and study skills. Clients may include students needing appropriate school placement or adults needing workplace support.

Subject Matter Tutoring is offered in all subjects. When books, homework, and assignments are provided for the tutor to work with the student in a particular subject, This service is considered, Tutoring. When a specialized program is developed by the specialist, as a custom-designed educational plan to meet the specific needs of the individual student, this service is considered, Educational Therapy. In many cases, the student receiving educational therapy is a special education student. There is a difference in fees for these two services, which can be discussed with Carol M. Burton.
