Remove the Window Casing and Trim.

This is the first thing that you should do. Remove the jamb extension and the trim from around the existing old window is to use a prybar to remove the window. The jamb extension is usually just a piece of wood that has been ripped down and then attached to the window jamb so as to bring it even with the house wall.

Remove Old Window Track

Get a screw and unscrew the old window from the jamb then remove it. Be cautious so as not to break the glass while you are removing the window. A majority of the windows will be multiple window sashes that have moving tracks on the side. These types of windows are usually easier to just remove one sash at a time.

Repair the New Window Opening

After you have removed the old window out of the wall, make sure that there is no structural damage by inspecting the window jamb. It's not very uncommon for a window to leak, thus, rotting out the jamb. Replace or repair the damage if you find one before moving to the next step.  Measure your rough opening so as to be sure that the opening can be able to accommodate the new window.

Inspect the Window Stop

This is a piece of wood that is ripped down and then placed on the exterior side of the window jamb with the purpose to prevent the window from sliding from the opening it is supposed to be in. It's hard for the window stop to be in an unusable condition but do not take risks so just go ahead and check it out to make sure that it is in good condition. If the window stop is damaged, repair or replace the window stop properly.

Dry Fit Window

Before you start applying the silicone to the the window stop, try and dry fit the new window to the opening so as to make sure that there are no fitting issues. In case you encounter fitting issued, address them immediately and then try dry fitting the window again till you succeed. When dry fitting is done properly and the mistakes corrected the window should be able to fit snugly into the opening. Do not move on with till you are fully satisfied that the window fits appropriately/ as expected.

Install Window

This s the heat of the whole installation process and is actually very simple. The first thing you should do is to run a bead of silicone on all of the inside edges of the window stop then slide the new window into place properly. Now place a level across the top of the new window and then press cedar shims in between the jamb and the bottom of the window frame as necessary to get the window at the appropriate level. Complete the set up by screwing the window into place.

Add Finishing Touches and Paint
