Properly nurturing and maintaining a healthy lawn that can handle the ups and downs of each passing season is easier than you think. Consider the following tips a good place to start with a comprehensive lawn care system that's relatively easy and won't take a lot of time or money.
Use the following tips to keep your lawn looking pristine and the envy of all your neighbors.
1. Mow your grass high:
Many homeowners make the mistake of cutting the grass too short, which will eventually weaken the grass blades. Cutting it too short can actually harm the crown of the grass where it grows and also create the right conditions for weeds to permeate the ground and start growing. Mow your lawn as high as possible in order to store the necessary moisture and nutrients it needs to better survive diseases, drought periods, and other environmental stressors. Maintain a lawn of 3-1/2" plus that will enable good photosynthesis as well as support the grass in conquering weeds.
2. Water your lawn less:
A healthy lawn should ideally be watered less frequently but deeply in order to encourage deep root growth. A lawn can quickly get accustomed to over-watering. Instead of growing deeper to find water, roots will tend to stay closer to the surface in order to get enough water in the case of an over-watered lawn. Over time, an over-watered lawn won't have an extensive, strong root system and therefore be more vulnerable in recovering from drought and weed infestations.
3. Add compost to your lawn:
Adding rich compost to your lawn will build-up and enrich the soil and ultimately produce the conditions necessary to naturally feed the grass. A healthy soil-bed will naturally generate the nutrients that make grass grow, which makes traditional fertilizing unnecessary. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil is the foundation from which a beautiful lawn grows and composting is the key to making it happen.
Plants and grass are naturally weaker during key stages of growth or at various times throughout the season. Therefore, don't irritate an already stressed yard with excessive mowing, aerating, heavy traffic, etc. When a yard is stressed, it's more susceptible to diseases, pest infestations, and weeds. One more thing, don't personally get stressed over the condition of your yard if it needs a little work. Unless drought conditions persist, your lawn will naturally revitalize itself and the dead spots will disappear. Grass experiences ups and downs just like people. In the end, it will be fine.
