The Shiley Eye Center community mourns the loss of our generous and caring benefactor, Donald P. Shiley, who passed away on July 31, 2010. Mr. Shiley became famous for the invention of the Bjork-Shiley heart valve that revolutionized heart surgery in the 1970’s. He and his wife of 32 years, Darlene, have focused their philanthropic giving on health and the sciences.
Shiley Eye Center Director Stuart I. Brown, M.D. stated, “Donald Shiley was a remarkable man. He and his wife Darlene were responsible for the Shiley Eye Center’s development from the initial naming gift and with their continued support, the Center has grown to meet the increasing challenges of patient care and research. Donald and Darlene were always there – to provide lead gifts for new, innovative programs; to help fund the additions we have needed as the Shiley Eye Center grew; to offer wise counsel; and to represent the department of ophthalmology at countless Shiley Eye Center and community functions. We are proud to bear the Shiley name on our Center.”
