Equestrian/Pet Therapy at Stein Education Center
The Equestrian Therapy at Stein Education Center (SEC) Main Campus has been a weekly event for many years. The program provides a safe equestrian opportunity for our special needs children to enjoy an activity that helps them build balance, coordination and self esteem while they have fun and learn from the experience. The children love to spend time around Pippi; petting, brushing, feeding and riding. They look forward to the experience and are very proud of themselves after each ride.
We are extremely fortunate to have Special Education teacher Evelyn Marshall and Special Care Services director Chayo Chavez, certified by NARHA (North American Riders for the Handicapped Association), lead this program along with other qualified volunteers and staff. We are also lucky to have Pippi, our good-natured, gentle horse. We look forward to adding another horse to our program in the future. This wonderful equestrian therapy program is supported entirely by donations.
You can honor someone you love by sending a donation celebrating Pippi and our Equestrian Therapy Program. We will send a special Valentine to your loved one in February 2011 acknowledging your donation in their name...a sure way to put a smile on your loved one's face and on the face of a child as well.
IT'S EASY: Send a check to Vista Hill 8910 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., S.D. 92123 -- Attention: Pippi. OR click on DONATION; fill in required information (Select a Designation will be Stein Education Center -- Education); go to Questions/Comments and type in the word Valentine. OR call 858-514-5151. And be sure to let us have the name and address of the person who is to receive the Valentine.
TheDomestic Violence Awareness Project...
In 1995, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) convened several national domestic violence organizations - the Family Violence Prevention Fund, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the National Domestic Violence Hotline and later the National Network to End Domestic Violence - to launch a new effort to support domestic violence programs' awareness and education efforts for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), observed annually in October. The collaborative effort became the Domestic Violence Awareness Project (DVAP).
Today, the DVAP is a diverse and unique partnership of local, tribal, state and national domestic violence organizations and networks. The DVAP collaborates to collect, develop and distribute resources and ideas relevant to advocates' ongoing public and prevention awareness and education efforts not only in preparation for DVAM, but also throughout the year.
National Drug Control Policy Director Visits ParentCare President Obama's newly appointed Director for the White House National Drug Control Policy, Gil Kerlikowske met and toured the Don Allen ParentCare Family Recovery Center in La Mesa on May 17th. Watch the video
Our special guest and his department assistants interacted with a panel of six recovery program graduates to hear what matters most to women undergoing addiction treatment. Each alumna openly described their own unique path into alcohol and drug addiction. They were determined to share more than their pain and shame. Panelists emphasized the growth and strength they now have in being clean, sober, and productive women.
As the national Drug Czar, Director Kerlikowske is conducting planned visits at various public sector drug treatment sites around the country, looking at examples of best practices for recovery. ParentCare was selected by his White House team because of the exceptional treatment and case management services, including co-occurring disorders, for parenting women seeking recovery from alcohol and drugs.
Great Cell Phone Drive Helps Special Care Services Your old cell phones can help raise funds for Stein Education Center 's Special Care Services (formerly the Recreation Program). We have started a cell phone collection drive that will raise money for program field trips and supplies. State funding reductions have made it more important than ever to find sources of program support. There are drop-off collection boxes at the Stein Education Center main campus (6145 Decena Drive) and Vista Hill main office (8910 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.). Phones need not be in working order and will be re-purposed for charitable use or properly recycled if unusable. For information on the drive or day care services for school age developmentally disabled children, please call Director Chayo Chavez at 619.281.5511 ext. 221.
