Body Institute A Northern California School of Massage Therapy
The Body Institute is located in the quiet, northern California community of Granite Bay, which is conveniently located in Placer County, near Sacramento between Roseville, Rocklin and Folsom. Our massage and bodywork school and massage therapy clinic have been serving this community since 1996. Our philosophy of teaching helps to create a therapist that is strong in massage therapy skills and has an intuitive touch; knows how to use the proper body mechanics and can focus their attention and energy on the massage client; and can promote a healing environment where the client is transported into the peaceful world of a relaxed state of mind. Our massage body workers learn to touch with their heart through their skilled hands and in doing so gain greatly from each and every massage they do. Massage Therapy can benefit both the client and the therapist and at The Body Institute, we create and nurture a long lasting relation with both our massage students and our clinic clients. It is an environment that is safe, friendly and fun. Body Institute meets the needs of the aspiring student as well as the massage professional looking for Continuing Education.
Our Student Massage Therapy Clinic is integrated into the educational program, giving the student more applied practice and more confidence than from classroom experience alone. Classroom knowledge is only the start. In the Body Institute Clinic the student integrates knowledge and kinesthetic skills into the clinic setting. Students that have progressed into the clinic portion of the program see clients in our spa like setting. Clients seeing our students in the student massage clinic eagerly participate in the student’s growth and are excited to have the student practice newly learned techniques in 1 hour, 1 ½ hour and 2 hour massage and bodywork sessions.

Planning Ahead for Your Massage Career
We maintain the highest placement records possible because our Program Alumni have the option to work as an employee in our Massage Clinic. After having worked in our massage clinic most of our Massage and Bodywork Program Alumni go on to work in massage clinics, athletic clubs and spas throughout Northern California, many of which seek out the unique touch of the Body Institute Alumni. Because our program fosters the entrepreneur in many, The Body Institute has had many Alumni that have gone on to open their own spas and clinics.
Local Licensure Requirements:
California State Licensure
There is currently no state license required for massage therapy. This means that a Massage Therapist can obtain the required hours in the local area in which they will practice. There have been multiple attempts at state licensure in California, including a current bill (SB 731). All attempts at licensure have been aimed at 250 Hour for a Massage Practitioner and 500 Hours for a Massage Therapist. Those entering the profession should prepare for this.
Is There a Grandfather Clause?
All previous attempts at California Licensure have required those who are practicing massage to upgrade their education within a specified time to meet the new requirements. No proposed Grandfather clause to date has excused therapists from obtaining the required hours to practice.
State Licensure in other States
Most states require 500 hours some require more.
Employment Requirements: Spas, Clinics and Clubs that offer Massage Therapy
Because there is no state licensure, massage requirements can be determined by the Spa, Clinic or Club owner. It is best to research the individual requirements of the Spas and Clinics in which you may want to work. Many are requiring a minimum of 250 hours and some are now requiring 500. Therefore, we urge our students to research the area in which they desire to work.
National Certification requires 500 hours. The Body Institute is currently approved for National Certification Education. Note that any students interested in National Certification must take a combination of Required Classes, and Elective Classes.
