Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church is a growing, diverse family of Christians that have come together to form a close, caring community centered in Jesus Christ. We are part of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. We warmly embrace people from all religious and cultural backgrounds. Our preaching is boldly biblical; our theology, traditional and conservative; our ways, evangelical; and our attitude, caring and embracing. We invite you to join us in serving and praising our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Last Sunday: We looked at the appointed Gospel reading, a funny (and rather surprising) story of Jesus' coming to Jericho and His encounter with a man named Zacchaeus. This curious story (that many remember from Sunday School days) is LOADED with Gospel - amazing, even shocking Gospel! Turns out it's Gospel not just for this VERY unlikely loser with the funny name, but it's Gospel for US! We discussed how we are "with" Zacchaeus up there in that tree, out on that limb.... And how Jesus cames to US, looks to US, calls US by name, invites Himself into the homes and hearts of US. And the miracle He did then for Zacchaeus is a miracle He STILL does!
Our Brother Al Maebe was called Home by our gracious Father on Sunday morning. He has been struggling with rapidly advancing cancer and Alzheimers. He died peacefully and painlessly. He was 83. Services are TBA. Cards may be sent to Ida at:
Thanksgiving Worship is Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, 7:00 PM. What could be more appropriate?
Coming.... Thanksgiving Festival, Sunday November 23, 2:00).
Thanksgiving Festival (Formerly "Thankfeast") is coming on Sunday, November 21, 2:00 in the Fellowship/Education building. This is the full, traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings, and with a bit of Thanksgiving stuff in there, too. We do this not only because it's good food and fellowship (reason enough) but MOSTLY because our friends eat and this is a good excuse to INVITE them (they may just discover we're nice folks and that the church roof doesn't fall in when they show up). For over 35 years, we've ESPECIALLY encourage Marines away from home - and we're doing that this year, too. But this year, we're adding a new group - the families and staff associated with the preschool on our campus! We want to embrace them, too! It will make for RECORD involvement (what a nice problem to have!) and for us to "kick it up" a bit on the food we bring (we can do that). So, invite any you know that eat. Invite Marines - especially those without family nearby. And please be generous in signing up to bring food. We always have enough to feed a small army, but this year it might not be so small.

Name that Sunday School! Our Board of Directors discussed that "Sunday School" is a very 50's kind of name and doesn't have a very positive connotation for kids today. While a name is just a name, it still impacts perceptions! So, we're looking for a new name for this. Ideas???? Email 'em to me! While we're on the topic, our THANKS to Diane Finley, Dorothy Mendez, Michelle Westcarr and Chris Tittle for being such faithful and terrific ___________ teachers! (Maybe we need a new title for them?).
Bible Studies! We deeply encourage everyone to participate in at least one study! If none seems helpful or none is offered at a time that works for you, talk to the Pastor. We'll do our best to begin new studies on subjects and at times that work for you. We currently offer three:
Wednesday 10/12, 6:60 pm @ Pastor's home (dinner included); "The Lord's Prayer"
Thursday, 9:30 AM, church. The Book of Acts.
Don't Forget! Choir is back! The new season was delayed while Marydee had some health issues, but it's back up and running strong now (with Marydee THANKFULLY doing much better). Rehearsals are Tuesdays, 6:30. Questions? Call Marydee at 760.745.2525.
