Friends of the Bodhi Tree Bookstore,
Many of you have heard that the Bodhi Tree Bookstore’s future is undergoing a transition. In response to the many questions we have received, we have written this to share with you the plans and possibilities.
Phil and Elsa Thompson and Stan and Fran Madson, who opened the Bodhi Tree in July of 1970, are going to retire after 40 great years. The world of books and bookstores is changing dramatically to the detriment of the independent retailer. The bookstore and its’ owners are gracefully, but definitely, aging. This, along with the economy of the times, and the technological changes in publishing prodded us to make the decision we did.
We have entered an agreement to sell the properties and the buildings of the Bodhi Tree Bookstore. We plan to be open for business as usual until the fall of 2011. During this time we will see what can be done to keep the store’s material, which we have valued for so long, available to the public. A philosopher-entrepreneur may come along to relocate and carry-on, there are possibilities and already, serious inquiries. We will make every effort to support a person or organization who is committed to continue our tradition of service in the community.
There have been two articles in the local papers. LA Times, Jan 18, 2010 and LA Weekly, Jan 12, 2010

Melrose Avenue is one of the most colorful streets in Hollywood. It is famous for its majestic blue and green Pacific Design Center, its modern art galleries, its glamorous eateries and its high fashion outlets. But for all its trendiness, Melrose also boasts a heart formed by one of its oldest landmarks, The Bodhi Tree Bookstore.
The Bodhi Tree Bookstore is but one of many places available to the consummate book reader. We believe we can provide you a unique experience - perhaps intangible, but nevertheless real. We strive to provide a comprehensive selection, extraordinary service, and a warm, friendly environment. Thank you for choosing us to be your bookstore.
