The Phillips School of Massage offers a comprehensive course in massage therapy and is recognized throughout the United States for excellence in holistic education. We have a variety of program levels from which to choose to meet the educational requirements for different states, varying in length from 100 to 650 hours. We also have an extensive continuing education program including evening and weekend workshops and one to three-week intensives in a variety of bodywork modalities.
Anatomy, physiology and nutrition are explored from both Eastern and Western perspectives. Body dynamics, postural awareness and business practices complete the training. Students, teachers and staff together create a nurturing, supportive environment for learning, personal enfoldment and healing. The student-teacher ratio is generally one instructor or student assistant for every two to eight students, with regular one-on-one practice and feedback. CMT2 Professional Students, as graduates of the CMT1 Practitioner training, assist and share their experience and support with current CMT1 students while deepening their own understanding of the work.
Our community outreach program offers exposure to special populations. The CMT1 experience includes compassionate touch for convalescent hospital residents, sports massage for community athletes and relaxing massage for staff at the local hospital. CMT2 students massage combat veterans in therapy for post-traumatic stress, oncology patients and survivors and the general public. Graduates of CMT2 may participate in a weekly Graduate Clinic and a Safe Touch massage clinic for victims and survivors of domestic violence.
Our facilities are light and spacious with beauty and harmony in mind. The student store carries all recommended and suggested books and tapes along with sheets, oils, lotions and a variety of other bodywork tools. We also have a growing library of books available for student use.
Many of our graduates go directly into rewarding careers working in chiropractic offices, health clubs, physical therapy centers, massage collectives or private practice.
Phillips School of Massage provides a unique learning environment that supports each students journey of self-discovery and growth in their pursuit of learning the healing art of massage. We receive comments of appreciation from students, graduates, employers, clients and even massage board licensing staff in appreciation of the quality of education and experience of Phillips School of Massage graduates. We realized itd be a good idea to share some of these comments with prospective students, knowing that these testimonials provide a personal glance into Phillips School of Massage. We also invite you to attend one of our open houses where students, graduates and teachers come to share their experiences at Phillips School of Massage and are available to answer any questions you might have.
From Employers: Your graduates really fit the needs of a chiropractic office they are trained therapists and not just spa people. They know anatomy and how to work with soft tissue injuries. When there is an opening here, your school is the only one I advertise with whatever youre doing is turning out the best therapists out there! - Virginia at Russell Chiropractic
I completed training in massage therapy at Phillips School of Massage in 1993 and it was a life-changing experienced for me. I became more grounded and focused in many aspects of my life. A few months after completing massage training, my wife and I acquired a massage center, Pathways to Health in Auburn, CA, which we own to this day. Over the past thirteen years, we have received interview massages from therapists with a wide variety of training experience. We found PSM graduates excel in many aspects of the massage process that goes far beyond what we have experienced in applicants from other schools, especially their ability to be grounded in their approach to the body. We actively seek therapists trained by Judy (Phillips).
At PSM, the student learns much more than massage therapy. Judy teaches a holistic approach to life that benefits students no matter what path they take in life. Joel Jody Curry, MSW, CMT, Owner, Pathways to Health
My heart fills with warmth and gratitude when I think of my experience at the Phillips School of Massage. Living in the Bay Area, my decision to attend massage school brought an overwhelming number of options, and I studied and weighed them all with fervor. When my search was complete I found myself in Nevada City, away from my home and my husband, ready to spend a winter in the foothills. I knew that I was making the right choice and that I had found a school that fit my approach to massage. What I did not know, however, was that I was entering into a kind of sacred space and an experience different from anything I had known before.
The depth of connection that spun like a web throughout our class was such a gift and I cherish it to this day. I learned so much about massage while gaining a great respect, appreciation and understanding of the body and how to touch it. The class gave me just what I was looking for: the knowledge and confidence to pour love from my heart through my hands. So here I am, a year and a half later. I have my own private practice within which I am able to grow the web of connection larger every day. And I have been joyfully surprised to find that, even here in the Bay Area, the Phillips School of Massage carries a weight of respect. I was even offered a position at a high-end spa without an interview or trial massage just based upon the fact that I was a PSM graduate! So I must say, thank you to Judy, to my classmates and to all who work to make the Phillips School of Massage such a blessing. I carry you in my heart always! -In gratitude, Jamie Russell, CMT
My experience with Phillips School of Massage has been the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me (besides of course the birth of my three children). I learned that being a massage therapist includes a deep understanding and compassion for oneself and a healing of ourselves before we can truly have compassion for our clients. Clients have told me that my massage is very different from others theyve received and I believe its the focus on presence, compassion and the heart connection that makes the difference. Thank you for changing my life. I love being a massage therapist! - Carolan Corder, CMT
I thought the Level I program was going to be a tough act to follow. I had an amazing, exciting experience in Level II where I felt totally safe and supported at the same time. Thank you, Judy! I was so impressed with the quality of the instructors each and every one brought their innovation and passion for their modality with a clear and graceful presence. I feel such respect and honor for these people who are at the top of their field and so lucky that I had such a warm and personal setting in which to learn. Thanks to PSM, I am re-inspired to be the very best I can be. After completing a massage interview with a day spa manager, her massage-induced drawl of a response was, Oh honey, we have to keep you! -Diana DeMarco, CMT
