About Three Palms-
Three Palms Nursery was founded by Phil Kitchen in rural Yolo County on the Schmeiser Ranch in 1988. The historic Schmeiser house was built in 1868 and features three 50ft. tall California Fan Palms (Washingtonia filifera) in front of a classic Victorian home which gave name to the nursery.
The love of growing plants and gardening began for Phil in the late '70's out of his experience in co-founding the Davis Farmers & Craftsman's Market in 1972 and managing the market for three years, gaining him a great respect for farming and agriculture in Northern California. In 1978 he began producing fruits, vegetables and cut flowers to sell at the Davis Farmers Market.
In 1988 a small nursery was created. The concept was to (locally) produce ornamental plants for landscaping and sell them at the ranch with occasional weekend plant sales. Over the years production increased and the nursery began extending its hours and selling both wholesale and retail, and growing plants not found at other local nurseries. In 1996 the Nursery moved to its current location on Historic Highway 40 (Russell Blvd), about 15 minutes west from downtown Davis. The scenic new location is surrounded by native oaks and now sells over 250 varieties of ornamentals, fruit and shade trees attractively displayed on the one acre growing grounds.
Three Palms is Yolo County's only retail production nursery. The challenge here is to grow a unique selection of perennials, ornamentals, trees, grasses and natives that will endure the harsh dry summers and hard alkaline water that we are faced with in much of this area. Three Palms Nursery is now in its 20th year and continues to grow and expand with over 12,000 containers to choose from, all guaranteed to grow HERE ...'cause they're grown HERE.
