We live in a world filled with activities and distractions that beckon our attention. Finding the time to develop our spiritual lives can prove to be a daunting challenge. We are fully aware that we need to spend quiet time with God in order to recharge our spiritual batteries and strengthen our relationship with God. But for many of us we find it hard to carve out time in our busy schedules that we can be alone with God. The cultivation of our spiritual lives requires effort on our part and is akin to a person who, after years of living with doors open suddenly decides to shut them. The visitors who used to come and enter the home start pounding on the doors, wondering why they are not being let into the home. Spiritual discipline invites us into moments of solitude, in which we can feel God's presence. Let us strive to incorporate this into our lives.
This fall our stewardship campaign will focus on the Biblical text from John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world He GAVE . . ." Too often our focus is on what we do not have, or worse, what others around us possess that we do not. This year the Stewardship Committee would ask you to "count your blessings" beginning with the greatest gift of all: Jesus. God spared no expense in providing us with a savior who willingly suffered and died that we might have it all - forgiveness of sins, new life in the Holy Spirit, and life everlasting with Him.
Imagine if you were in a war zone and your best buddy threw himself on a grenade and saved your life. What would you do; pay for his funeral expenses, help out his widow, visit his parents? What will you do in return for Jesus' sacrifice for you? What return will you make of time, talent and treasure? The stewardship committee has a plan to help you decide.
