VBS 2010 - Egypt - Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace
Welcome to worship and fellowship at the Orange Seventh-day Adventist Church, located in the heart of Orange County. Our mission is "to lead people to Jesus, and help them to be totally committed to him." See what our church family is all about, and then come and visit us.
Recently I was given one of the best gifts I have ever received. A few months ago I had a conversation with my Father-in-law who is a golf enthusiast. I told him that I had been wanting to learn to play for some time since many of my friends play. A few weeks later, he came to visit and he did not come empty handed. He pulled out of his car a set of golf clubs. He proceeded to tell me that they were an old set and that he didn’t use them anymore. It was a complete set. I was thankful for them. Then they sat in the corner of the living room for several weeks. One day two of my friends noticed the clubs and couldn’t believe that I had this set of clubs, especially because I didn’t even know how to play. As it turns out, the clubs were a good set.
Lately I have been out to the driving range to practice my swing and I even played a round of golf. What has become painfully clear to me, is that even though I have a great set of clubs it doesn’t mean that I can now somehow magically play golf well. It is not the golf clubs that make a golfer great. Instead it is the skill of the golfer that makes him a great golfer.
It is possible to be in possession of something and not really own it. One example is the Bible. Jesus once said to a group of religious people who probably had the Bible memorized, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40) It is very possible to read the Bible and know the stories in the Bible and know all of the laws and still not have a relationship with Jesus. I see this happen all of the time. Well intentioned people reading the Bible because they hold it to be the “Word of God” and yet they do not come to Jesus. A person who knows the Bible well doesn't mean that they have faith in Jesus. It just means that they have read the Bible. There are some people who quote the Bible often. It doesn't mean they have faith in Jesus, it simply means they have a good memory. There are some people who make an idol out of the Bible. (Next week we will explore what it means to make an idol out of the Bible).
