The Posse is a private non-profit 501(C)4 corporation.
It is not an agency or department of the County of Monterey or the Sheriff's Department.

The history of the Monterey County Sheriff's Posse (MCSP) began on February 28, 1939 when six Salinas men met and formed the Salinas Rodeo Riders and Sheriff's Posse of Monterey County. The six men were: C.D. Hansen, Sonnick Johnson, Jack Long, Jeff Parrish, Marvin Roberts and Doc Watson. The Posse, incorporated in 1946, maintains a 50 acre ranch located at 395 Old Natividad Rd on the outskirts of Salinas where they host numerous events including the BIG HAT BBQ and Junior Rodeo. We also offer Team roping, team penning/sorting and barrel racing during the summer at the Posse arena. The Posse awards annual scholarships through Hartnell College in memory of former member, Charles Atwood thanks to a generous donation from the Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation.
