Our approach to treating patients
Walnut Creek Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is a small, patient-oriented practice. Our staff is devoted to the well-being of each of our patients, and we strive hard to help all of our patients return to a fulfilling level of activity. Our patients range from professional and student athletes, to recreational athletes and enthusiasts, who all share the common goal of working toward achieving a pain-free and active lifestyle. And we have had great success in helping our patients reach this goal, by providing each of them with individualized care and attention.
Dr. Workman has a strong background in sports medicine, both as a practicing physician and as an athlete. He was a baseball pitcher for the University of California Golden Bears, and played professionally in the California Angels system.
After completing a five-year orthopedic residency at Yale Medical School, Dr. Workman travelled to Boston where he completed his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, he served as a team physician and travelled with the New England Patriots (NFL). In addition, he has provided orthopedic sports medicine coverage for the Boston Bruins Hockey Club (NHL), New England Revolution Soccer team (MLS), the United States Women's Soccer team, the women's professional tennis tour (USTA), and Harvard University Athletics. His extensive involvement with elite level athletes has furthered his understanding of athletic injuries and treatment.
Shortly after entering private practice in California, he was asked to join the medical staff for the San Francisco Giants (MLB). He currently sees Cal intercollegiate athletes at his bi-weekly Intercollegiate Athletic Clinic on campus. He also serves as the team doctor for both Acalanes High School (Lafayette) and Northgate High School (Walnut Creek).
During his residency, and later as a fellow in orthopedic sports medicine, Dr. Workman perfected his arthroscopic surgical techniques, which allow him to treat many sports and work-related injuries through a minimally-invasive approach. Arthroscopy offers huge benefits to the patient: these less-invasive surgical procedures result in decreased post-operative pain and complications, and hasten recovery time and a return to athletic endeavors or simple daily activities.
Dr. Workman has gained national recognition for his arthroscopic approach to treating injuries, which he teaches to orthopedic surgeons from around the world. He is a consultant to major international sports medicine corporations, he conducts clinical research, and is actively involved in national and international sports medicine societies.
