Every year we participate in the National Spelling Bee. We hold class spelling bees and then have champions from the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades compete in a written bee to become The Principled Academy Spelling Champion. In January, Justin Adsuara, an 8th grader this year, won our school spelling bee.
In February he competed with 250 other young people from around the Bay Area in a written bee, the first stage of the next level of competition. From that group, the top 50 are selected to compete in a Regional Spelling Bee, which is not written, but oral. Justin made the cut into the next level, which will be held on March 20.
The 50 students, each in turn, stand in front of a microphone to hear their word. They are allowed to ask only certain questions, such as what part of speech is the word, can you use it in a sentence, etc. Then they have to spell it orally. They are not allowed to take paper and pencil to the microphone. Any letter they say cannot be "taken back" if they suddenly realize they have made a mistake. There is a live audience and it can be a nerve-wracking experience. The winner of this Regional Spelling Bee goes on to the National competition in Washington, D.C.
Justin is a world-rated Rubiks' Cube competitor. He even competes blindfolded! He regularly participates in various meets in the United States, and has even competed in the Philippines. He recently received word that he has been accepted into his first choice for high school, Bishop O'Dowd. The Principled Academy school community is very proud of him.
