Named after the perennial herb native to the Mediterranean, it was introduced by the Greeks and Romans and appears in Gothic art and architecture, and was popular during the Renaissance period as well. The acanthus leaf has always symbolized the highest degree of refinement and elegance. As with most classical elements of design, the Acanthus leaf has underlying meaning. It is thought to represent long life and also the cyclical nature of life.
Why the name Acanthus?
