Diabetes, a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar, is a leading cause of kidney failure, blindness and amputations, as well as a major cause of heart disease and stroke. The CDC's last report on diabetes published three years ago concluded that nearly 24 million Americans had diabetes, with approximately 6 million of them being totally unaware that they had the disease, and an additional estimated 57 million Americans had what is referred to as "Pre-diabetes".
The rate of diabetes in the United States has nearly doubled in the last ten years. A number of factors are linked to an increased risk of diabetes: getting older, family history, certain ethnic backgrounds, being overweight and not getting regular exercise. With the well known fact that obesity is on the rise, it is expected that millions more are at risk of developing diabetes, unless they are willing to seriously change their lifestyle to include proper diet and regular exercise.

The 'Urgent Care Association of America' (UCAOA) strives to have Urgent Care Centers recognized as an essential part of the healthcare delivery system. To that end it offers a certification program to help patients distinguish centers that meet high quality standards.
There are more than 8,700 Urgent Care Centers in the U.S, of which only 167 are certified. VHMA is proud to be one of those 167 certified, as well as one of only 6 certified in California.
