On December 19, 2008, the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act went into effect. This act specifies that public swimming pools, wading pools, spas and hot tubs must be equipped with anti-entrapment drain covers, and each pool and spa with a single main drain must also be equipped with a device or system designed to prevent entrapment, such as a safety vacuum release system or a second drain at least 3 feet away.
