Right: A terrazzo garage floor; the look of terrazzo floor was and is still popular in the mid-century and modern commercial structures. Perhaps considered the original truly decorative concrete floor it is a process of using specific colored cement and aggregate usually marble or other stone, even manmade, to achieve the desired look you see here. Real terrazzo is expensive because the cost to fabricate on site. The technology used to grind, hone, and polish existing slabs of concrete is used in the production of terrazzo but in this case the grinding is to a depth to "cut-away" and expose the aggregate. That is what gives it this unique appearance.

Overlays are referred to a "resurfacing" from 1/8 inch or more. They are either troweled or self-leveling, this process has evolved over the years to provide virtually endless design possibilities. Overlays simply cover over an existing surface with a uniform look of concrete, multi-colored pools, sawed sectors or borders are very popular looks now. Microtoppings refer to treatment that is usually simi-leveling or self-leveling of 1/8 inch or less, technically a painted floor is a microtopped floor.
