We encounter quite a few people who check out the local big-box retailers (which shall remain nameless) and quickly ask “Why does your bike cost $____ more? They look the same!” That’s a very fair and simple question, but the answer is a little longer than that!
I could write a small book on this topic but I’ll stick to the bullet points for now. The biggest differences are this:
1) Safety – Yes, this is ALWAYS our primary concern. When you buy a bike from Bicycle Service Center you know it’s been professionally assembled and tested. Large retailers hire people to assemble bikes that have no professional bike building experience at all. If they did, they would be working in a shop! We frequently see bikes that are “new” that have incorrectly assembled shifters and brakes (yikes!) that under perform or could fail unexpectedly.
2) Fit – When you are at a big box retailer the same person selling you a bike might be selling you a new TV the next day (nothing personal against them, it’s just the facts). When you buy a bike from us we’ll make sure it fits you (or your child). That way your bike will be comfortable and safe to ride.
2a) Parents – Don’t think you must buy a bike too big so you children can “grow into it”. We can make adjustments, as your child gets older to get the maximum life from the bike and still be safe!
3) Service – Obviously we’re big on service, since it’s in our name! When you buy a bike from a large retailer you own it. Then when something goes wrong, you are stuck. Sadly, we see time and time again people buying the $199 bike, and then spending $100 in service replacing poor parts and fixing poor workmanship when we could have sold them a $300 bike than is 10 times better! (And service is INCLUDED in any bike you buy from us!)
4) Quality – This is a BIG one. Hands down a bike you buy from a large retailer will never have the same quality components as a bike we sell (a bold claim, but true). As the saying goes, “garbage in, garbage out”. It doesn’t matter how much time and money you put into fixing and upgrading a poorly built bike, it will still perform poorly in the end.
5) Fun – Yes, riding a bike should be fun! When you buy something that fits well and works well, it is just more fun for everyone!
In the end, you’ll actually save money by buying a bike from a shop like Bicycle Service Center over a large retailer. Please feel free to give us a call or stop by. We love to talk bikes and promise a very low-pressure experience (except for the tires which are always properly inflated).
We wanted to let you know that our 2nd annual Diamond Valley Lake Poker Ride is scheduled for October 2nd. This year's ride will benefit Valley Wide Recreation Centers.
For those of you who haven't heard, this is a fun ride around Diamond Valley Lake. The course is 22 miles long and pretty darn flat. We'll be giving away prizes for the top 20 hands and also raffling off a brand new Giant Talon 2 29r!
