Our Design Philosophy
Perhaps the most important part of what we do as designers is to listen. To pay attention. To our clients, to their unique personalities and lifestyles, to what their home or their property means to them and to the dreams they have for it. Our experience and instincts as designers are essential to the design process, but we constantly discover that good design does not occur in a vacuum. Only after listening carefully to our clients are we able to provide our clients with truly significant input.
A second bulwark of our design philosophy is, of course, the site, with all the unique qualities and characteristics, the potentials and the challenges, the special sense of place that makes every site distinctive and deserving of an equally distinctive design solution. The great Chinese philosopher-designers would not presume to begin to design a site until they had taken tea there every afternoon for a fortnight. We cannot always afford that luxurious an approach to design, but we spend as much time on a site as we can, mapping, photographing, and talking with our clients and neighbors, before we putting pencil to paper.
Which brings up the third leg of our design tripod the pencil and paper. Though we remain avid computer-enthusiasts, well-equipped with the latest in architectural and civil engineering software, the well-lit upstairs of our studio, where our conceptual design work occurs, is computer-free. For us, the strokes of a soft pencil on trace paper still are the most effective way of capturing those elusive flights of imagination and inspiration. Our conceptual design sketches, through which our initial concepts evolve into fully developed site plans, are almost exclusively the products of pencil and paper.
