A Day on Angel Island
One of California’s most beautiful State Parks is just a ferry boat ride away. Come for the day and enjoy lunch at the Cove Café & Cantina, rent a bicycle, take a TramTour or Segway Tour, or put on your hiking shoes and climb Mt. Livermore!
Angel Island is a wonderful natural resource, rich with California history and perfect for a family outing, celebration, or a "day away" from urban life. The Island offers miles of hiking trails, including a wonderful trek to the top of Mt. Livermore (the Island's highest point) where you'll find spectacular panoramic views of the entire Bay Area. For a more leisurely day, stroll the paved Perimeter Road around the Island, taking in the views of Tiburon, San Francisco, the East Bay, and the San Rafael Bridge. On many days you’ll see all five Bay Area bridges.
A Rich History
The Island’s past includes centuries of important cultural, social, and political activity – from the Coastal Miwok Native Americans whose artifacts we are still uncovering, to the Spanish naval officer for whom Ayala Cove is named. The U.S. Navy took possesion of the Island in the mid-nineteenth centuryand began a long period of military use that spanned the Civil War, Spanish American War, both World Wars, and even the Cold War.
United States Immigration Station:
OPEN FOR TOURS
USIS is once again open for tours, after extensive renovations to restore this important National Historic Landmark.
Known as the "Ellis Island of the West," Angel Island processed millions of immigrants between 1910 – 1940. Most of these immigrants were Asian, and were subjected to medical exams, interrogations, and even extended internment in their search for a new life in a new land. Visit USIS, take a tour and learn about the courage and heartbreak that defined the immigrant experience during this period of discrimination and hardship.
