Since 1952, for over half of a century, three generations of Millers at Miller Custom Boats have been in the custom boat building profession. The desire to build boats has been passed down from Dave Miller to his son Jim, and to Jim’s son,. Justin. Today, Jim and Justin create hand crafted, hand finished Boat Rods for people who want something they can’t get anywhere else.
In 1950, Dave built the first Miller Custom Boat in his garage in Culver City. The success of that glass over wood flatbottom prompted Dave to open Miller Custom Boats in Calabasas in 1952. Jim began working with his father in 1964 during the transition to fiberglass bottom halves with traditional wood decks.
Miller Boats moved to Santa Maria in 1970 where the 19' Ski Jet, 19' Sprinter, 20' Mini Cruiser and the 21' Cruiser (the Miller Classics) were designed and built for almost 20 years. With production as high as 3 to 5 boats per week during the 70's and 80's, Jim was convinced in 1989 that it was time for refreshing change.
Using his considerable skills and expertise, Jim began building by hand, with relatively simple tools, elegant and beautiful hand sculptured exotic wood decks with glass composite lightweight v-bottom hulls, designed specifically for v-drives. Jim continues to bring fresh ideas to age-old wood shaping using his eye and instinct for the right combination to create luxurious, soft riding, v-drive boats.
Miller Custom Boats has always been known for ski and performance boats, designed and manufactured with excellent tooling, beautiful gel coat and a light-weight, hand-lamination lay-up. Good looking, comfortable and functional interiors, open-bow, hard deck or wood deck, Miller builds the Miller Classics, Evolution and the new Sport Cruiser with care and precision, producing a one-of-a-kind custom boat to each client’s specification. Miller Custom Boats is well respected for their custom restorations of vintage boats or updating a newer boat.
