It should also be pointed out that a normal x-ray still does not rule out all things. Nerves can be pinched and the films may look good. You cannot see muscles and ligaments and tendons and blood vessels and inflammation on films.

A plain x-ray may appear normal and an MRI may reveal herniated discs. Still in all, a wealth of information is gleaned from x-rays of the parts of the body that have pain. An x-ray is just a good place to start subsequent to a consultation and a spinal examination.
