When people think of church an array of thoughts race through our mind. For some it is a picture of stained glass windows. Others think of form and ritual. While others may think that church is a place where “nice” people go to feel good about themselves. While others may be a little more cynical and think that the church is a place full of hypocrites with a political agenda. Some may think of it as just rules and regulations. While some churches may be those at some points that is not what I dream of when I think of what church is about. Nor is it what Jesus envisioned when He declared He would build His Church and that he would be coming back for a victorious church without spot or wrinkle.
Oftena personsperceptions confuse the issues of what the church should be all about. Church should be less about its tradition and more about transformation. We are not here to just exist and perpetuate a religious institution. We are here to have a relationship with the one who created us and to share that life and love with all those around. Church should not be a place that we go to be bored, pass time and count the minutes till we leave. It should notbe a place that is out of touch and irrelevant with people and culture. It should be aplace where you can experience the fullness of what God has for you a place where you canbe inspired, encouraged andequipped to live life the way God intended it. A place where you can know God betterand learn to live forHim. Jesus said He came to give life and give it abundantly(or to the fullest). If you aren’t living life to the fullest ofwhat God has for you then you are selling yourself short. Church should be a place where you “experience what life is all about.”
Sochurch isnot for perfect people, or for those who have everything together. Church is a place where people can come togetherin this journey of life and explore together the potential of a lifelived for God that will bring thegreatest satisfaction there is. We look for happiness or joy in a lot of places, but ultimately it is fleeting unless it is foundedupon a relationship with Jesus.
If you look at the Bibleyou will see that when the church was birthed it was alive and exploding. People were drawn to it and it multiplied. They were connected as a community that worshipped God, served and ministered to others, sacrificed for the cause of Christ as theywalked together on the journey.Life church will be commited to these priortiesas expressed in three parts.
1) A place toBelieve – The firststep is to find faith in a God who loves you, created you and has a plan for your life. His Word tells us that He so loved us thatHe gave himself up for us so that if we believe in him we could find the life thatHe designed for us (John 3:16). Healso created us to to know him and be in fellowship with him, and there is a part of us that is missing when we are not connected toHim (1 Corinthinthians 1:9;Colossians 1:16;Ecclesiastes 3:11). So church is aplace where you can believe and find faith for your todayand your future. A place where you candiscover a trust in God who wants to help you through every situation life throws at you.
2) A place toBelong – one of theidentifying marks of thechurchwesee in the Bible is that they were commited to each other. Thiswas notan exclusive club, but a community who reached out to all and included anyone who would respond. They understood that this thing called Christianity is lived out best with others in thejourney. His Wordsays that we are called to come together and encourage and challenge each otheras we followJesus (1 John 1:3, Hebrews 10:23-25). So a church is the place where we connect with others to become stronger and include more people.
3) A place to Become – the thing that identifies that something is alive is—it grows. As people we are always challenged to keep learning or growing. Well the church is a place that will help us truly discover, grow and become who we are called to be. As we worship God, Study His Word, serve and minister to others we will find who we truly are and the reason we are on this earth. The church helps to equip and prepare us to become all that we were inteded to be (Ephesians 4:12-16)
A lot ofpeople want to bash and blame thechurch forits flaws and imperfections. They want to say it is meaningless. But I know the church and its people are the hope for our communities and our future. It is the agent of change thatGod will use totransform and touchpeoples livesfrom the inside out; to give people hope and help for theirlives and their future. So come to church and “Experience what Life is all about!!!”
Life Church is a brand new church that is in the final formation process to officially launch this Fall. There has been quite a journey to get us to where we are but in a nutshell a small group of people began to meet and pray at the end of 2006 about this new church plant in Concord CA. This small group began to grow. In March Bible Studies were started out of our home that grew only by word of mouth. God began to connect people together to the vision that Life Church has and the people who are a part. People from a variety of background and expereinces began to explore a relationship with Jesus together. As God has begun to minister to people and connect people we have continued to grow. In May we began monthly gathering services and began to invite more people. In August we shifted to Sunday Morning services every other week at 9:30 a.m. We meet in the Worship Center of King’s Valley Christian School. We want to invite you to be part of this journey and be part of a church where you can Believe, Belong and Become! Come Experience what Life is all About!
