Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tree safe growing over my house and garden?
If it is inspected and pruned correctly to create a stronger structure then yes. But if left it will at some point drop wood.
Can you chop this tree down so I get more light in my garden?
This depends on what type of tree it is. If it is a native or a healthy recommended species then no, and it may have protection by law. However if it is an invasive species such as a Eucalyptus or an unhealthy tree with poor form and structure then most likely yes. When ever we remove a tree in this situation we advise replanting with a more appropriate tree species.
This tree makes a real mess on my driveway/lawn. What can we do?
Pruning can reduce the amount of debris a tree drops but ultimately this is a small price we pay for having trees. Composting leaves is always a good idea too.
My neighbors tree is overhanging into my garden. Can we cut it back?
Yes you can legally prune back to the property boundary line. However I always recommend communicating with your neighbors to let them know what you intend to do. The cost of this is also your responsibility.
Often the tree will not be balanced if one side is cut back only and this can be potentially hazardous. I recommend and in some circumstances insist that the entire tree is pruned. So keeping on good terms with neighbors is highly recommended!
Why is my tree dead?
- Pests, diseases and old age
- Construction work causing root death from waste/chemical spills or intentional tipping into soil. Compaction and actual damage to stem.
- Excavation. Any kind of digging or trenching in the root plate area damages the root system. Even if it is only 12 inches deep - most of the roots are in the top two feet of soil.
- Lack of water. Most species are non native and not capable of surviving the conditions they live in. It is usually the conditions from the previous year or two that weakens and/or kills a tree.
