First we begin by obtaining a permit from the proper authorities and then head out to the woods; usually a two-hour drive from the shop. We then select and cut the trees that are either already on the ground, dying, or standing-dead. Very few are taken, that are still growing strong, unless they are being crowded out and getting no sunlight. This works out well for our products because the tighter the grain the better, and that is exactly what results from trees growing too thickly. It also works out well for the environment, allowing sunlight to get to the healthy trees. When the trees are thinner, there's less fuel for any potential fires due to tree removal. This is also advantageous to the Forest Service and Firefighters! The Forest Service or other agencies that have allowed us permits, always call us back because we do a nice and neat job of cleaning up after ourselves. We call that good stewardship & Everyone WINS!
Once we have a good load on our dump trailer we head back to the shop. Upon arriving ,we sort the material according to size and application. The logs with burls (sometimes called conks) are set aside for beds and table legs because of their unique character. The 5" and larger logs are placed on log decks to dry for later use as posts. The smaller trees are cut into various lengths and put in the storage barn for drying.
McNabb Log Railing & Beds began out of the ashes of the Fountain Fire in 1993. We prayed about starting a business with material that would obviously go to waste. 64,000 acres of beautiful trees had burned. It was devastating for our community. Some folks used the wood for firewood, but we had bigger ideas. We discovered there were no log railing manufacturers in Northern California at the time. Only Log Home companies offered log railing with their packages and most came from out of state. We wanted to offer railing to all home owners. We knew there would be no other market for the smaller trees. Rod has lived and worked in this area, and with trees for over 20 years.
We bought a lathe and started learning the hard way! There were many lessons along the way. We literally almost lost our heads spinning the logs!We now creatively offer our customers a wide range of products, from raw material to log railing and furniture. All of our products are assembled with the best hardware (such as full extension slides and sturdy stool returns) as well as hand selected pieces of processed lodge poles.
We believe our products can be labeled heirloom quality. We love the challenge of any custom order. Feel free to contact us for satisfied references.
Delivery can be arranged outside the area, perhaps a ROAD TRIP! For the customer and for us, or let's meet in the middle.
