The first Thanksgiving occurred in 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians shared a harvest feast. But it wasnt until the midst of the Civil War in 1863 that the holiday we know as Thanksgiving became the national tradition, held every fourth Thursday in November.
Amid all of the festivities and food this Thanksgiving, remember to take time to reflect on everything we should all be thankful for.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month
Diabetes is a serious disease that has affected nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States. Another 57 million Americans are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and one out of every 3 children born today will have a future of diabetes if these trends continue. More than just a condition, diabetes is a disease with life threatening consequences.
For the past year, the American Diabetes Association has been advocating a Stop Diabetes movement to raise awareness of the disease and help confront, fight and most importantly, stop diabetes. To learn more about this program and discover how your can help, visit the American Diabetes Association website.
A Tribute for All Veterans
In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day and a legal holiday to remember those who participated in the Great War-World War I. After World War II, which saw the largest deployment of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, November 11th was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in honor of American veterans of all wars.
Not to be confused with Memorial Day which honors those who died in a war, Veterans Day is a day to pay tribute and thank all Veterans who have ever fought or gave their life for this country. Today it is celebrated with parades and various celebrations across the county. Each year it begins formally with a wreath placed on the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.
