Student Services' Current Level Instruction grants students the opportunity to improve in any academic course that they may be struggling with. Our tutors use innovative methods to equip students with the tools they need to excel in all subjects. Our methods stem from our belief that students must enjoy the learning process and be interested in their work to truly improve. At Student Services, we care about more than just your child's grade. We care about your child's growth both as a student and as an individual.

Custom instruction is for students with low or failing grades or for students who need in depth assistance with writing, math, or reading. In this tutoring style, tutors focus on reviewing previous material from months or years ago in order to create a solid foundation for future learning. Each program uses a placement test to assess problem areas and to plan improvement. In addition, the programs come with subject-specific workbooks and prior to each session the tutor prepares a lesson plan which summarizes the material, the state standards that will be covered, and any homework that will be given. The tutor's goal is for the student to have a clear understanding of all material from the past before moving on to his or her current material.

Student Services' math program is for students (grades K-12) with low or failing grades. Since math is a cumulative subject and all previous levels must be understood to succeed in the next level, we provide a placement test to find out exactly where your child's current knowledge stands. We use this placement test to place students into the appropriate grade level based on the results. Using workbooks as a tool, we make certain that the student has a firm grasp on concepts from the past before proceeding.

Our mathematics workbooks from Singapore have allowed us to create a learning environment in which tutor supervision and independent practice go hand in hand. These workbooks use the highly effective Concrete> Pictorial>Abstract approach. Students are introduced to new concepts by simple, easy to understand concrete and pictorial examples. These examples are then applied to the abstract mathematical concepts behind them. This approach encourages an active thinking process, better communication of mathematical ideas, and advanced problem solving. With such a solid foundation, advanced mathematics will come much more easily.

Student Services' reading program is for elementary school students (grades K-6) who are in need of some extra help with their reading skills. The program focuses on helping students strengthen their word recognition, fluency, phonics, and comprehension skills. Each student is given an assessment test to place them in the appropriate grade level based on their existing knowledge.

Our reading program provides high quality educational materials which facilitate learning and ensure academic achievement and success. The Spectrum workbooks have allowed us to create a learning environment in which tutor supervision and independent practice go hand in hand. Each workbook walks the student through the required California state standards. We also provide specific vocabulary words for each grade level, phonics practice, and weekly reading logs.

Your child will not only be reading stories, but discovering themes and meanings that relate to young learners!

Student Services' writing program is for elementary and middle school students who would like some extra help with their writing skills. Our program enhances students' writing skills by instructing them in multiple methods for various types of writing. After determining the purpose of a writing sample, our tutors teach a specific process to achieve that purpose while keeping writing organized and concise. Each student is placed in a writing program appropriate for his or her grade level. Tutors encourage students to learn new writing styles by writing about topics that they are interested in or passionate about. In this way, we hope our students learn to enjoy writing and utilize the power that a good education provides.

Student Services advanced program teaches the basic skills; reading, writing and math, but in a very different way than traditional. They have acknowledged the fact that students need more than these basic skills to succeed in the changing world. And have learned a way to implement other skills in their daily teaching.

Our tutors go into more depth with the reading, writing, or math material the student is currently learning in school while introducing the student to new and more advanced material. The student may also be given independent projects, which develop independent thought processes and problem solving proficiency. Whether the student is in first grade and just learning to read, or being introduced to more complex material in the seventh grade, all bright students need to be challenged.
