We opened our doors in La Mesa January 2nd, 2006 after a time of prayer and assessing the needs of the community. The combination of a survey I conducted of local churches and my experience seeing clients showed there was little in the way of lower fee therapeutic services with a Biblically based foundation.
By lower fee I am not talking about the typical sliding scale that starts at $40 and goes up from there. Many who are unable to afford such a weekly expense could benefit greatly from therapy given the chance to do so. Our goal as an organization is to allow everyone this opportunity. At the same time I believe the client needs to have an investment into the process, therefore services will not be provided for free.
What is meant by Biblical counseling? The term Christian counseling is often used to identify a set of values that are in some way a part of the counseling provided. The difficulty is that the consumer is not informed what part it plays. For example, is the therapist a Christian or does the therapist share Christian values with the client? With Biblical counseling Biblical Truth is ever present and any psychological training is filtered through the Bible with a net effect of guidance that stays true to the Word of God.
La Mesa was chosen as the main office location because of its centrality to the surrounding communities. We are a block away from one of the La Mesa trolley stops, which increases accessibility to those who have limited means of travel and we are right off the highway making locating us easier.
Some Current Projects
We are creating two service-oriented features. The first is a room dedicated to play therapy for working with children. This room may double as an area for children to play while the parents are in session. As many are not able to access childcare, especially single mothers, this will allow them the chance to receive help that may otherwise not be possible.
The second area is a lending library where clients will be able to check out books that can supplement therapy and assist them with what they are struggling with; parenting issues, couple communication, or their walk with God.
