Jiu-Jitsu practicioners swarmed the CSU Dominguez Hills Gymnasium in Carson, California over the weekend. Carlson Gracie students joined up with Carlson Gracie Black Belt instructor Rodrigo Medeiros to compete under his Revolution Team banner in an effort to recapture the title that slipped away last year by the most narrow of margins. The end result of an organized campaign was a record setting 5th National Title in the last 6 years and a large disparity in points for the team amongst it's fellow podium finishers. With over a 200 point gap between 1st and 2nd place, and an overall score exceeding 2nd & 3rd place combined, our team enjoyed it's best performance in the American Nationals to date and we now have our sites set on the NOGI World Championships in Long Beach in November. For more information on the American National event please visit http://www.bjjrevolutionteam.com/2010/09/bjj-revolution-team-2010-us-nationals-team-champions.html Congratulations Professor and to the team for pulling in nearly a hundred medals over the weekend. Master Carlson was travelling during the event but is excited to get back to Temecula this month and help prepare for the Worlds.
At the same time, 4 Hours North in Las Vegas Nevada, Joao Assis contiinued his recent string of NOGI smashing and won the Grapplers Quest event at the Mr. Olympia by submitting all of his opponents enroute to another Gold medal performance. Temecula manager and student Orlando Alonso accompanied the instructor for the weekend. When asked about the matches, Alonso said "it was the most amazing display of skill you could see, Joao was just awesome!" Congratulations Joao!
Here is a clip of our good friend Clint Crabtree from Grand Rapids BJJ showing a variation of the double underhook pass that he likes to use.

We would like to thank everyone that supported our first event. We had many competitors and people that helped to make it happen. Our sponsors Defense Soap, BodyBuilding.com and Swain Mats really came through for us which is great because we love their products. A big thank you goes out to all the schools who attended, Rodrigo, Clark, Alfredo, Stefano, Rafael, Daniel and Phil for bringing competitors and helping with the matches, and especially Sensei Jones for donating the use of his mats and scoring equipment. Troy Acker brought his students and his experience as an IBJJF ring coordinator in making brackets for us. Thank you. Charles Dao our student and neighbor at ICON performance and fitness opened his doors to let us hold weigh-ins and registration on his side of the building and the Sadlak family was a big help at the desks.
Gracie Mag has fielded an article on the event – http://www.graciemag.com/en/2010/08/carlson-gracie-invitational/

3 students went to participate in the South Bay Open of 2010' over the weeekend hosted by Caique Jiu-Jitsu in Carson California. Jeorge Villalobos, Chloe Cronin & Tom Cronin all brought home medals for the team. Jeorge went 3-0 on his way to his first championship gold medal and commented "I can't believe it! …I finally won!" Chloe Cronin was inserted into the adult division and despite competing against older more experienced practitioners, Chloe submitted her first opponent via armbar and won a silver medal and was all smiles for going 1-1 in her first major event. Father Tom Cronin went 3-0 with a first round win of 21-0 and then followed up with two submissions to pull in a Gold medal for the school.
Temecula Instructor Joao Assis has been putting on a clinic in NOGI Jiu-Jitsu lately. On May 28th at the UFC Expo in Las Vegas, Joao went undefeated and claimed 3 division titles against tough competition such as Bill Cooper, Josh Barnett and Jeff Monson. In his final match with Monson, Joao ended the fight by submitting the snowman from the back via choke. This victory earned Joao a spot in the Tachi Palace "Worlds Best Grappler" tournament in Lemoore Ca. In the 32 man event Joao faced stacked competition and submitted his first three opponents. He then won against Bruno Bastos in the semi final and faced ADCC & World champion Xande Ribeiro in a powerhouse final match that saw Joao working a brutal leglock on the highly ranked veteran.
