The Next Community Conversations is October 21st!
Community Conversations, a partnership between the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, The Sacramento Bee and Capital Public Radio, offers a forgotten way to become an informed citizen- by talking and listening to your neighbors. On May 11, 2010, July 13, 2010 and September 16, 2010 at coffeehouses across Sacramento, community members gathered to participate in civil discussions. Community Conversations creates gathering places for neighbors to enjoy the experience of mutual learning and community engagement.
Our goal for Community Conversations is simple- to give neighbors a chance to listen to each other and learn from one another's thinking. Our hope is bolder- that informed discussion of local issues in a non-politicized environment will lead to better informed, more engaged citizens with fresh optimism that problems can be solved through human interaction.

Anyone Can Be a Philanthropist! What do Ted Turner, George Lucas, Michael Bloomberg and David Rockefeller all have in common? Sure they are billionaires. More importantly, they have decided to do something meaningful with their wealth. Inspired by Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates, they have joined over 40 of the world's billionaires to sign "The Giving Pledge" and donate the majority of their wealth to charity through their estate plans.
At the Foundation, we believe that anyone can be a philanthropist. That's why we have thrown our support behind California Plan Your Giving Day on October 1st, which is a statewide challenge to make giving a normal part of estate planning. No matter how large or small, if everyone pledged 10% or more of their estate to a community organization, we could truly change the world. We are reaching out and asking everyone to take part in securing a stronger future for this region by taking the pledge to include charitable giving in their estate plan. Why let the billionaires have all the fun? Please visit www.californiaplanyourgiving.com or contact Chief Marketing and Development Officer, Shirlee Tully, at shirlee@sacregcf.org, to learn how you can make your pledge to support this community for the generations to come, either through the Foundation or the nonprofit of your choice.
WE DID IT! With the overwhelming support of the entire community, One Day To Prevent Homelessness has raised over $400,000 to prevent homelessness in Sacramento. This fundraising feat will be matched 4 to 1 by the federal government, delivering a total of over $2 million into the innovative and proven Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP). The Foundation wishes to thank every donor who has made a contribution, from the one woman who was facing homelessness herself yet found compassion to give $50, to the many church congregations across the Sacramento region who collectively raised $142,000, to our media partnersKCRA, KFBK, and Sacramento News and Reviewwho highlighted compelling stories about the new face of homelessness.
Coming together as a community, the program has already assisted and housed 1168 individuals and families and can now prevent homelessness and rapidly re-house up to 2000 individuals and families in the coming year. This incredible program is a testament to the ability of our community to recognize a problem and take real steps towards a solution. Faith, business, elected and community leaders all came together to create a seamless and thoughtful program that effectively meets the needs of those most affected by the economic crisis. The Sacramento region has a truly generous spirit representing the best of what people can accomplish together when working to create an even better place to live.
