Yoga is a psycho-physical discipline developed in India where its roots stretch back more than 5,000 years. Traditionally, the goal of Yoga is union with the Absolute or the true self. Today, most Yoga practices in the West focus on its physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. In a fitness setting the focus is on the practical benefits of Yoga, including improved physical fitness, mental clarity, stress control and general well-being. There are many styles of Yoga, with no style better than the other. The difference in style is usually about emphasis and is a matter of personal preference. The beauty of Yoga is in its versatility, allowing those who practice to focus on the psychological, physical or spiritual, or a combination of all three.
Studies have shown that there seems to be something about Yoga; vs. exercise and controlled breathing, that is beneficial. Most exercise is goal oriented while Yoga is a process. If you fail at exercise, you miss your goal. You didn't do 100 pushups. You couldn't run the whole mile. In Yoga, you succeed by trying. There's also a difference on the physical level. For example, while weight training is rebuilding muscle tissue, Yoga increases strength by toning the muscles.
Researchers have documented many physical and psychological benefits from Yoga. They find that there's something unique about Yoga which provides benefits exceeding those of other forms of controlled breathing and exercise. Further, preliminary studies in the United States and India suggest that Yoga may be helpful for specific conditions such as heart disease, asthma, epilepsy, carpal tunnel, anxiety and other conditions.
