Chula Vista means "Beautiful View."
Less than ten miles south of San Diego, and less than ten miles north of Tijuana, the city of Chula Vista is the second largest city in San Diego County, the fourteenth largest city in the state of California, and the 74th largest city in the country. It is home to approximately 270,000 people.
Chula Vista's historic downtown district has more than 100 of the country's top specialty stores. The Otay Ranch TOwn Center is an outdoor shopping, dining, and entertainment destination that is both family-friendly with a library, play fountain for kids, and dog park. In downtown, the Chula Vista Center houses major retailers, theaters, and fine specialty shopping. The Third Avenue Village, considered the cultural center of the city, hosts a weekly farmers market and seasonal concerts among its historic buildings. THere are also more than 60 parks and recreation facilities in the city.
In April of 2018, the Chula Vista City Council and Board of Port Commissioners (for the Port of San Diego) unanimously approved a Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA. The agreement was created to advance the resort hotel and convention center project for the Chula Vista Bayfront. The Bayfront will create thousands of new jobs, has allocated more than 40% (230 of 535 acres) of approved space for dedicated parks, will work to protect natural coastal resources, and is expected to become a hub for conference and visitor traffic bringing in over $1.3 billion for the local economy.
The University and Innovation District in Chula Vista is 375 acres dedicated to creating an urban, walkable campus for 20,000 students. The site is less than two miles from the US/Mexico border, is next to an 11,375 acre ecological preserve, and adjacent to the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. Currently still in progress, the District is hoped to be the next great university in California.
