Computed Tomography is commonly referred to as a CT scan or CAT scan. Computed tomography utilizes rotating x-rays around a patient to make cross-sectional images and is an extremely rapid imaging modality. Modern CT machines can generate hundreds of these cross-sectional images in just seconds. Computed tomography not only aids in the diagnosis of disease and patient prognostics. It is also used as a tool in the planning of the patient's treatment options.
Veterinary radiologists often use the CT examination to:
• diagnose cancer of the lungs and nasal cavity
• diagnose abnormal bloods vessels in the liver
• diagnose disorders of the abdomen such as kidney stones
• diagnose disorders of bones and joints such as elbow dysplasia
• plan and properly administer radiation treatments for tumors
• guide biopsies and other minimally invasive procedures
• plan surgery
