What is a Veterinary Ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions involving the eyes and associated structures. A veterinary ophthalmologist may treat animals of any species.

Highly specialized equipment is used for examination of the eyes, including slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy (right photo), tonometry, and various other modalities. The operating room is equipped to handle the very specific needs of eye surgery. More photographs and text can be found on the Tours page.
Screening for Eye Diseases in Dogs
Screening of dogs for inherited eye diseases is an important service provided by a veterinary ophthalmologist. There are many types of genetic eye conditions, including cataracts, retinal dysplasia and retinal degeneration which occur with a higher incidence in purebred dogs.

This screening examination is used to detect early forms of these conditions in dogs which do not yet exhibit symptoms. This is particularly important if breeding is being contemplated. The Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) maintains a registry of animals who have been examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist and found to be free of significant inherited eye conditions.
