Dear Prospective Parents and Friends,
We are pleased to welcome your interest in Montessori Family School. Founded in 1981, we are currently one of the oldest Montessori schools in the East Bay providing continuous Montessori education to children, pre-school through middle school. We provide a model for families and educators who are interested in both the Montessori method and progressive education. Based on “hands-on learning” which engages children in multiple ways, Montessori education has proven to be highly successful in educating all kinds of learners. Our well-equipped classrooms are specifically prepared to meet the developmental needs of our students, and provide them with an excellent academic foundation, which both fosters a lifelong love of learning and provides all students with the skills to pursue their interests and passions.
At Montessori Family School life is centered on the children and their social, intellectual, physical and creative needs. Because all classrooms are child centered, our well-trained and seasoned teachers are able to support the individual learning style of each child in his or her care. Trained to provide an individualized education, teachers are able to both accelerate and support individual student learning, depending on each student’s needs, in the rich areas of study provided in the Montessori curriculum. Each classroom has specific areas, materials and activities to support student development in the following areas: Practical Life (care of themselves and the environment), Sensorial (the underpinning of the math and geometry curriculum), Language Arts, Grammar, Literature, Geometry, Mathematics and Cultural Subjects (history, art, music, botany, zoology, anatomy, geography, chemistry and physics).
At Montessori Family School all aspects of our school community work together as an integrated whole. Based on the ecological model of the interrelatedness of all life, our community functions as a large extended family in a learning environment that serves everyone. Based on the idea that learning is a lifelong goal, we incorporate new educational discoveries and recent brain research. This is reflected in our classrooms and parent events. Teachers and parents are constantly broadening their horizons to be able to implement what is new and relevant.
Our graduates are well prepared to take the “next step” as they move on in their lives. They are extremely well received at all of the schools they choose to attend, both private and public. Because of the ethical and moral underpinnings they have encountered at MFS in their class meetings and daily interactions, students develop sophisticated conflict resolution skills, which they take with them wherever they go. As a result, they act as peacemakers as they go forth into the world to share their skills and values.
