My name is Peter Marks and I am a piano technician. A-440 Piano Service is my company name. Since 1979, I have been sole proprietor, sole employee, and the sole soul of this business.
I service all makes and models of pianos regardless of age, type, or style. These include: bird cage, square grands, spinets, consoles, studios, full sized uprights, petite grands, middle to full sized grands, and concert grands.
The significance of 'A-440' is derived from the frequency, (speed), at which the 'A' note above the middle 'C' note on the piano keyboard vibrates. When the piano wire is tightened to this point, and then struck or excited in some manner, it will vibrate the surrounding air producing a tone known as 'A'. If the wire is pitched, (tightened), to vibrate 440 times in one second, the tone is referred to as 'A-440'. This is also known as 'concert pitch', or, 'standard pitch', and is the accepted pitch of the music industry to which musicians tune their instruments. Without a standard, (agreed), pitch to tune, musicians would not be able to harmonize with one another.
