Postal Regulatory Commission Denies Postal Service Exigent Rate Request Decision is Unanimous
Press Release September 30,2010 Washington, DC - The Postal Regulatory Commission today issued Order No. 547 in Docket R2010-4 denying a Postal Service request for an average 5.6 percent rate increase. The Commission found that the Postal Service failed to justiff rate increases in excess of its statutory CPI price cap.
U.S. Postal Service propose increase to counter low volume
Fighting to survive a deepening financial crisis due to the low mail volume for which e-mail and the declining economy are partially to blame, the Postal Service said Tuesday it wants to increase the price of first-class stamps by 2 cents starting in January 2011. Other postage costs would rise as well.
"The Postal Service faces a serious risk of financial insolvency," postal vice president Stephen M. Kearney said, indicating without changes a time could come when the agency would not be able to pay its bills.
