Attractions Events Fort Bragg Mendocino County Skunk Train: Built as a logging railroad, the Skunk began as a logical vehicle for moving massive redwood logs to sawmills on the Mendocino Coast. Steam passenger service began in 1904 and was extended to Willits in 1911, and was discontinued in 1925 when self-powered yellow "Skunk" rail cars were inaugurated. The trains were quickly nicknamed for their original gas engines which prompted folks to say "You can smell 'em before you see 'em." More modern equipment was added in later years, many of which can still be ridden. The vintage 1925 M-100 motorcar-the only remaining train of its kind in use today-runs on the line year-round, as does the 1935 M-300 motorcar. They are joined by three 1950's diesel-powered engines and the famous Old No. 45 steam engine, a majestic 1924 Baldwin steam engine-the kind that kids dream about when they think of "trains". Moving at a leisurely pace, the trains pull covered cars and open observation cars, perfect for photography. The Skunk line runs 40 miles from Fort Bragg on the coast to Willits on Highway 101, or halfway to Northspur station and back. Along the way, the tracks cross 30 bridges and trestles and pass through two deep mountain tunnels, with stunning scenery in between. Excursions leave Fort Bragg everyday at 10:00 with summer BBQ's departing Tuesday through Saturday at 3:30pm. Call 866-457-5685 for more information and reservations or visit www.SkunkTrain.com

Don't overlook the boutique wineries, or perhaps select a varietal and map your day's travels based on locating the perfect Cabernet Franc, or syrah, or . . .
Whale Watching Specials Packages with Hotels: The 2008 celebration is all about the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale with their newborn calves from the protected lagoons of western Baja to their ancestral feeding grounds in the cold waters of the Bering Sea. The migrating whales, numbering 18,000 - 23,000 individuals, pass by the Mendocino Coast twice each year: once going south between the months of November and February, and again going north between the months of February and June. Since they don't migrate simultaneously, not all the whales make it all the way to Baja. Some linger off shore and observations suggest that these are primarily the younger males. Newly pregnant females lead the northward migration, followed by males.
